Method & syntheses
Founding documents of the corpus: formalism of the SU(2) bench, epistemic strata labelling every result (derived / conjectured / measured), bifurcation law, and synthesis notes of the complete P0–P33 programme.
The verdict operator
- D — measured data, frozen (constants, masses, coefficients), never re-adjusted;
- S — candidate structure (effective hamiltonian, topology, coupling rule…);
- L — discriminating lever: every mechanism must survive its own removal;
- V — verdict frozen by SHA-256 fingerprint (full replicability, 180 artefacts).
Theory — Georgi–Glashow SU(2) Gauge Model and Topological Defects
What's under the hood: formalism, parameters, references. Engineer-level technical document. Self-contained: every equation is the one running in the code. Version 1.0 — 3 August 2027.
1. The model in one page
The banc implements the Georgi–Glashow model (1973): an SU(2) gauge theory in 3+1 dimensions, spontaneously broken to U(1) by a Higgs field in the adjoint representation (real triplet). It is the smallest non-abelian theory possessing a topological solitonic solution: the magnetic monopole of 't Hooft–Polyakov (1974).
| Ingredient | Choice | Motivation |
|---|---|---|
| Gauge group | SU(2) | smallest simple non-abelian group |
| Higgs field | real triplet Φᵃ (adjoint) | breaks SU(2) → U(1), leaves a massless "photon" |
| Potential | V = (λ/4)(Φ² − v²)² | double well, minimum at ‖Φ‖ = v |
| Spatial symmetry | hedgehog (radial) | reduces 3D to 2 functions of one variable |
Physical content. Three gauge fields: two become massive (W±, mass M_W = e·v), one remains massless (the "photon", the residual U(1)). The Higgs acquires mass m_H = √(2λ)·v. In the broken phase, the model resembles electrodynamics — plus a new object: the monopole.
The founding theorem ('t Hooft, Polyakov, 1974): any gauge theory where a simple group G is broken to a subgroup containing U(1) possesses monopole solutions. Topological reason: Higgs configurations at infinity live on the vacuum sphere S² = G/H, and π₂(S²) = ℤ — the winding degree is an integer unchanged by continuous deformation: magnetic charge is conserved by topology, not by a symmetry.
2. Formalism
2.1 Conventions
Natural units ℏ = c = 1, Heaviside–Lorentz charge convention. Indices a = 1,2,3 (group) ; i = 1,2,3 (space). The gauge generator is anti-hermitian; the covariant coupling DᵢΦᵃ = ∂ᵢΦᵃ + e ε_{abc} Aᵢᵇ Φᶜ.
2.2 Lagrangian and energy
B0
The three energy blocks — E_gauge, E_higgs, E_pot — are the decomposition used by the machine to identify what carries the mass in each regime (§5.3).
2.3 Hedgehog ansatz (radial reduction)
Spherical symmetry coupling space and group (the hedgehog):
B1
The Higgs field points radially outward at infinity — hence "hedgehog". The degree of the map S² → S² of Φ/‖Φ‖ is 1: unit magnetic charge.
2.4 The radial functional (heart of the code)
The static energy reduces exactly to a 1D integral:
B2
Boundary conditions:
| ξ = 0 | ξ → ∞ | |
|---|---|---|
| H | 0 (regularity) | 1 (vacuum) |
| K | 1 (regularity) | 0 (vacuum) |
This is exactly the functional that p0_monopole_su2.py minimises. The variations (Euler–Lagrange equations):
B3
(in the code, these variations are implemented as discrete functional gradient, §6.1.)
2.5 Bogomolny bound (the anchor)
Bogomolny (1976): energy square completion ⇒
B4
In the limit λ → 0 (ρ → 0, called BPS — Bogomolny–Prasad–Sommerfield), the bound is saturated: M = 4πv/e, i.e. C(0) = 1 exactly, and the second-order equations reduce to first order (self-duality): K′ = −KH, H′ = (1−K²−H)/ξ … whose exact solution is
B5
Role in the machine: C(0) = 1 is a known external analytic truth — it serves as a standard. The banc is validated when it recovers C → 1 at small ρ and the literature value at ρ = 1; only then does it predict.
2.6 Dirac quantisation
Dirac (1931): the quantum coherence of an electric charge q in the presence of a monopole g imposes
B6
For the 't Hooft–Polyakov monopole: g = 4π/e. The smallest electric charge of the model is that of the SU(2) fundamental doublet: q = e/2. Hence q·g = (e/2)(4π/e) = 2π exactly (n = 1) — independent of v, e, λ. The charge is quantised by the topology of the group, not by an adjusted parameter. In the code, g is measured on the numerical solution by K(∞) = 0 (ratio 1.000000).
2.7 Residual electromagnetic field and monopole charge
't Hooft defines the field of the unbroken U(1) by projecting on the Higgs direction:
B7
At infinity, B = (g/4π) x̂/r² : monopole field. Total flux ∮ B·dS = g = 4π/e.
Bridge to strings: a Nielsen–Olesen vortex of charge Q carries flux Φ_Q = 2πQ/e. The monopole flux 4π/e therefore exactly equals that of a Q = 2 vortex: a monopole can be the endpoint of a double flux tube. This is the 't Hooft–Mandelstam confinement mechanism: in a phase where monopoles condense, electric charges are joined by flux tubes — energy ∝ distance.
2.8 Bound states on the monopole background
A charged scalar (mass m, charge q) in the field of the dyon (monopole additionally carrying a localised electric charge) obeys the radial Schrödinger equation:
B8
The truncation at core radius R_c models the finite charge distribution of the core (at r < R_c, the potential no longer diverges). Outside the core, the potential is pure Coulomb — hence the expected signatures:
- energies E_n = −α²m/(2n²) (Balmer) ;
- exact ns/np/nd degeneracy (hidden SO(4) symmetry, Laplace–Runge–Lenz vector conserved for any 1/r potential) ;
- mean radii ⟨r⟩_{nl} = (a₀/2)[3n² − l(l+1)], a₀ = 1/(mα).
Any deviation from these three signatures measures the non-Coulombicity of the core. Measured: agreement to 10⁻⁴ (note P1).
2.9 The virial (stability test)
Under dilatation x → μx, the energy of a configuration writes E(μ) = μE₁ + μ⁻¹E₂ + μ³E₃ with here E₁ = E_higgs(kinetic), E₂ = E_gauge, E₃ = E_pot. Equilibrium requires dE/dμ|₁ = 0:
B9
Control measure used: v = E_higgs + 3E_pot ; at equilibrium v ≈ E_gauge, and v > 0 without compensation = unstable. This is Derrick's criterion (1964): it killed the induced U(1) branch (G19: v > 15 for all coupling) before any dynamics.
3. Parameter tables
3.1 Constitutive model parameters (free inputs)
| Symbol | Name | Role | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| e | SU(2) gauge charge | fixes M_W = ev and scale ξ | §2.3 |
| v | Higgs vacuum value | fixes global mass scale M ∝ 4πv/e | §2.2 |
| λ | Higgs self-coupling | fixes m_H = √(2λ)v | §2.2 |

Essential point: in units 4πv/e, all monopole physics depends only on ρ. Mass, size, core composition = functions of ρ alone (measured laws §5.3). v and e fix the units, ρ fixes the structure.

6. Documented numerical pitfalls (read before modifying code)
- Functional gradient: the exact discrete variation is
DX × (continuous variation). Without the DX factor, descent fails. Validate by finite differences (relative error < 1 %) for every new functional. - Origin: centred grid (first point at DX/2) — never a node at ξ=0 (terms in 1/ξ²). Hard BCs frozen in gradient (
g[0]=0), otherwise topology diffuses. - Singular BPS limit: ρ→0 without potential, Derrick evicts Higgs to box boundary — measured C drops below 1 (artefact, published). The BPS bound is only accessible by ρ→0⁺ from converged branches.
- Multiple scales (P1): the core lives in lattice units (R_c ≈ 3), the atom in hundreds of lattice units (a₀ ≈ 137). A grid at core scale sees no bound state; the production grid covers 40 a₀ with 40000 points.
- Stiff regimes: ρ = 20 requires continuation (initialise from ρ = 12 solution) — cold start not converged (published).
- Gradient flow (G19): adaptive step mandatory (backtracking on energy) — fixed step = divergence (published).

Epistemic Stratification
All results in the Noetic Applications repository are classified according to three strata with distinct epistemic status. The solver holds only if these strata are kept disjoint.
S1 — Minimality (Programme 2027, closed channels)
What minimality provides: the anchoring scales, not the structure.
- c/cs = 120: ratio of light speed to substrate speed. Fixes a₀ = 137 lattice
units (atomic scale) against R_c = 3.04 units (core scale) — the hierarchy R_c/a₀ = 0.022 measured in P1.
- κR² = cs ≈ 1.64: nuclear binding energy. In P2, it was almost confused with
a gauge charge — the warning comes from minimality.
- Substrate benchmarks: turbulence (B4: slope −3.44, Kolmogorov constant ≈ 1.26,
PASS on 3 seeds) establishes the carrier medium as an effective Navier–Stokes fluid — the ground on which S3 structures stand.
What minimality does NOT provide: the monopole structure. The minimality theorems do not derive the 't Hooft–Polyakov monopole. They set the stage (scales, substrate, hierarchy), but the SU(2)+Higgs object is borrowed from gauge theory (stratum S3). Minimality gives the how much (the constants); it does not give the what (the gauge structure).
Boundary published: attempts to derive gauge structure from minimality failed (G18, G19). Minimality does not produce a monopole — this is a verdict, not a gap.
S2 — Preliminary Notions (historical corpus)
What preliminary notions provide: the question and the raw data.
The historical corpus (the mass series, the 18-ANU quantum audit) is the raw historical matter: the observation that a discrete quantum organises atomic masses (H = 18 ANU = 1.008, median agreement 0.04% on 88 elements). This regularity motivates the whole programme — including the solver.
Why S2 is held outside the solver core: the audit also shows the limit: null control (quantum 18A ± 18 reproduces a better agreement than the real corpus, rms 0.37%) means the 18-ANU regularity is compatible with a generic quantum — it does not discriminate the structure. The preliminary data poses the question ("is there a quantum?") but cannot decide which one. This is precisely why a solver was needed: preliminary notions provide the enigma, the solver provides the verdict. S2 is honoured as source, held outside the proof device.
S3 — Off-Corpus: Structure and Verdict
What off-corpus provides: the entire core of the solver.
The tested structure (Georgi–Glashow SU(2)+Higgs), the functional C(ρ), the Bogomolny bound (the standard), the Dirac theorem (e_g = 2π), the phase diagram (two regimes, ρ* ≈ 0.75) — all of this is constitutive assumed: chosen, not derived, and mapped by P0–P4 in the core repository. This is the only stratum that produces verdicts in the proper sense.
The Division of Labour
The solver is a three-pier bridge:
- S1 plants the pillars (measured scales)
- S3 spans the deck (constitutive structure)
- S2 is the bank from which we started (the question)
No pier can be omitted, but they do not do the same work — and the solidity of the whole comes from not asking the same thing of each.

Note de formalisation — corpus hors-programme (canal HDS / machine) Patrice Portemann, rédaction assistée. Verdicts sources : P-He, P-LaLr, P-CrCu (sha consignés), adossés à P31–P33 (frontière r₁₂). Statut méthodologique : conjecture motivée (catégorie II candidate), non loi démontrée — voir §4 (rigueur) et addendum v2.
2. Les trois verdicts qui la motivent
| Bifurcation | Z effectif | Verdict | Dérivabilité D | Lecture |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| He : H / Be / noble | 2 | 5/5, tranchée | 1,0 | propriétés convergent → gaz noble ; frontière nette |
| Cr/Cu : règle d⁵/d¹⁰ (3d) | ~24 | loi exacte | 1,0 | Cr,Cu seuls dérogent ; 8/10 suivent d(n+3)s² |
| Bloc f : La/Ac vs Lu/Lr | ~57–71 | 2/5, zone de liberté | 0,4 | propriétés divergent ; choix de convention |
| Cr/Cu : règle d⁵/d¹⁰ (4d) | ~42 | règle percée | 0,2 | Nb,Ru,Rh,Pd violent la règle |
| Cr/Cu : règle d⁵/d¹⁰ (5d) | ~79 | quasi caduque | 0,2 | Pt viole ; seul Au suit |
|---|---|---|
| Question | quelle configuration la nature adopte-t-elle ? | où placer la frontière entre deux classes ? |
| Exemple tranché | He (5/5) — les données convergent | — |
